Brown Lauds Job Creation at World’s Largest Solar Energy Project

BLYTHE — California Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. today joined Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and other federal, state and local officials at a groundbreaking ceremony for the Blythe Solar Power Project, a plan to build the largest solar energy facility in the world. The project will bring thousands of construction jobs to Riverside County and help California obtain 33 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.

“It makes sense to power California with renewable wind and solar energy that protects clean air and water and promotes energy independence,” Governor Brown said. “Renewable energy projects also stimulate business investment in California and create thousands of new jobs.”

Brown also visited six other solar and wind energy projects—just 5% of the state’s 270 total renewable energy projects—including: First Solar’s Desert Sunlight, Solar Millenium’s Palen Solar Power Project, NextEra’s Genesis facility, Solar Reserve’s Rice Airfield Project, Abengoa’s Mojave Solar Project, and Terragen’s Alta-Oak Creek wind power project (also the world’s largest wind project).

The projects Brown visited today are estimated to create 5,390 new construction jobs and 400 permanent jobs in California. Upon completion, these power plants will generate 3,470 megawatts of energy, or 6 percent of California’s peak energy requirement, which is enough energy to power more than 1.4 million single-family homes.

In 2010, the Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Technologies surveyed 12 solar, wind, and geothermal projects and found an average of 4,258 jobs would be created per month during construction. Skilled and non-skilled trades needed to work on these projects include steel and ironworkers, teamsters, plumbers and pipefitters, cement masons, electricians, operating engineers, and managers and general laborers. These projects would also bring nearly 1,000 long-term operations and maintenance jobs to California.

California’s move toward renewable energy is creating thousands of new jobs and providing economic benefits including:

•       Investment of approximately $250 million to $1.5 billion for a typical project

•       Hundreds to thousands of skilled and non-skilled workers employed per month

•       Long-term operations of approximately 30-40 years

In April 2011, Brown signed SBX1 2, which requires that one-third of the state’s electricity come from renewable sources by 2020. The renewable energy projects Brown visited today represent a significant step toward meeting state requirements to obtain 33 percent of energy from renewable sources like wind and solar by 2020.

Other federal, state and local officials and contractors attending today’s groundbreaking ceremony in Blythe included Bob Abbey, Bureau of Land Management Director, John Laird, California Secretary of Natural Resources, Joseph DeConinck, Mayor of Blythe, Uwe T. Schmidt, Solar Trust CEO, and Christoph Wolff, CEO of Solar Millennium AG.

Caudalie Spa

By Paige Donner

Paige Donner is a Luxury Writer

There is one spa that was voted The Best Spa In The World by Condé Nast readers in 2010. That spa is in France’s Bordeaux region and sits serenely in the middle of a vast and prestigious AOC Graves vineyard. The spa? It is Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa.

On her parents’ vineyard and just next to her sister’s Small Luxury Hotel, Les Sources de Caudalie, in Bordeaux, Mathilde Thomas discovered a naturally occurring hot springs 540 feet below ground. This is the site on which she and her husband, Bertrand, built the signature Caudalie Spa based on the anti-oxidant, ant-aging properties they have patented from the seeds and skins of grapes.

Caudalie Vinotherapie beauty products are used exclusively at this idyllic spa in the Bordeaux countryside, in a vast wooden structure planted next to a pond with swans and indoor-outdoor swimming pools. Treatment rooms are both upstairs and downstairs and it is possible to walk from your hotel room in your robe to your spa treatment in the Caudalie Vinotherapie Spa with only a few feet of exposure to the outside air.

Famous among their treatments are the Barrel Bath, the Honey and Wine Wrap, thePulp Friction Massage with fresh grapes and the Crushed Cabernet Scrub. At each of the relaxation stations are small dishes of fresh grapes alongside pitchers of fresh water. Portishead and other “lounge” music is piped in overhead from the sound system, unless you request classical or another genre.

You can also go for a simple Caudalie Grand Facial Treatment. This includes a full facial massage, gentle buffing cream made from a base of crushed grape seeds, a moisturizing (or purifying, as needed) mask and anti-ageing serum for eyes and lips. You also have the choice of a hand or foot massage. Afterwards you are welcome to linger downstairs in the lounge chairs that overlook the vineyards and dip into the pool that has strategic water jets fitted at just the perfect height to pulsate relaxing water onto your neck and shoulders.

There is also now a Caudalie Spa in NYC. Read More on Greening Beauty.

Los Angeles Convention Center’s Earth Awareness

2011_april_27_lacc_earth_aware_community_event_295

The morning kicked off with a ceremonial tree-planting with Los Angeles City Council President Pro Tempore Jan Perry. Ms. Perry gave the students a brief but inspiring talk about her environmental initiatives and participated in the planting of a new shade tree on the school grounds. Los Angeles Convention Center’s Chief Engineer, Rey Castro, gave the students a brief lecture about the LEED certification process and the Center’s solar program.

Afterwards, students visited the various display booths. Convention Center staff set up booths focused on LEED certification and water conservation efforts. Aqua-Tech Water Management walked students through the water purification process. Spectrum Engineering and BC International talked about energy management. LADWP was on hand to educate students on water and power conservation.

Los Angeles Convention Center’s Executive Chef, Brett Lewis, prepared three types of salsa from organic fruits and vegetables for students to taste. The ingredients were generously donated by Fresh Point Organic Foods.

After receiving a stamp at each booth, the students received a commemorative Earth Aware t-shirt. Chuck Burdick, Assistant Principal/SLC Administrator, of Santee Education Complex stated, “Successful high school programs in 2011 are those that include key community sponsors like the Los Angeles Convention Center. Their Earth Aware 2011 was a big success, attended by all of the Chemistry and Biology students at Santee Education Complex. The event raised awareness about conservation and healthy living, in a kid-friendly and interactive learning environment.

Our Santee students attended the Earth Day event in 2010 at the Convention Center, and this year the Convention Center came to us! They mean what they say as far as wanting to sustain partnerships with the local schools.”

Pouria Abbassi, General Manager and CEO, and Assistant General Manager and Chief Operating Officer, Phillip Hill, both of the Los Angeles Convention Center, addressed students about the importance of environmental initiatives and community involvement. They also participated in the dedication of the new tree, which was planted by student volunteers. Mr. Abbassi stated “The students of Santee Education Complex were enthusiastic, inquisitive, polite, and grateful for the interactive learning opportunity. Our staff and vendors were thrilled to teach them about environmental responsibility while answering questions about potential career paths.” The students signed a posterboard which will be displayed in the offices of the Los Angeles Convention Center.

About the Santee Education Complex Santee is a secondary school located at 1921 South Maple Avenue in South Los Angeles. It serves grades 9 through 12 and just over 3,000 students. The high school is revered for its innovative seven small learning communities. For more information, visit www.santeefalcons.org.

About the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC)

The Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) is one of the most technologically advanced convention and exhibition centers in the world. The hotel is involved, through its Leading Hotels of the Worldmembership in the “Make a carbon neutral booking” program, allowing their clients the opportunity to fully offset the carbon emissions generated by their travel.  It was just a year ago, in July 2010, that Hotel Fouquet’s Barrière was the first hotel in Europe to receive the distinguished Luxury Eco Certification Standard (L.E.C.S.) from Sustainable Travel International.

In 2010 approximately 4-6 tons of organic waste was recycled by Hotel Fouquet’s Barrière .

In 2009, 30 tons of waste was recycled by Hotel Fouquet’s Barrière.

The hotel works with Saria Industries which offers them the best by-products from their upstream and downstream Biomass recycling systems.  The company collects organic waste, primarily food waste, which is then sorted before being processed. Through a biomethane process, the waste generates gases used to produce heat and electrical power while the remaining solid waste is used as fertilizer.

Pop Earth is Pommery’s first “eco-citizen” champagne and it had its world debut at Hotel Fouquet’s Barrière. The champagne is made from Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay grapes harvested from sustainable vineyards. It is bottled in lighter bottles that use only half the glass and labelled with recycled paper and printed with solvent-free inks.

Tea served is all organic and the hotel prides itself on its relationship with Pascal Hamour who packages his teas in biodegradable bags. They serve these refined, subtly aromatic teas with Fair Trade sugar.

Every harvest season, the Hotel Fouquet’s Barrière team participates in the  Hotel Fouquet’s Barrière Grape Harvest on the Bordeaux Chateau of prestige winemaker Marie-Laure Lurton. The vintage is then auctioned off and proceeds are donated to the reforestation project of the Gabardon municipalities. Read the detailed article on Local Food And Wine.

Climate Refugees – Quileute Tribe In Our Backyard

The recent devastating Tsunami and its ensuing human tragedies have awoken us all to the realities of environmental destruction, as did last year’s horrific Gulf Oil Spill.

We often hear about “Climate Refugees” and I think the automatic reflex is to assume it will happen somewhere far, far away. Well, here is a Native American tribe, the Quileute Tribe, whose traditional home is in Washington State and who are facing the prospect of being Climate Refugees. Read More below…

Situated along the Pacific Ocean and bordering the Olympic National Park, the members of the tiny one square mile fishing village are placing their hopes of moving to higher ground on the recently filed Quileute Tsunami Protection legislation (HR 1162) introduced on March 17, 2011 by Congressman Norm Dicks and Senator Maria Cantwell (D).
