Film Review: Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives

Burningvccamp

[Guest Blogger Gina Hall has a Film Degree from USC. Her day job is with Global Green USA in Santa Monica]

The documentary Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives: The Environmental Footprint of War is a shocking revelation of the long-term environmental impact of America’s wars over the past century and isn’t for those with a weak stomach or who want to pretend we’re always the good guys. From hundreds of sunken World War II ships slowly leaking oil, to Agent Orange, to land-mines and cluster bombs that still litter a landscape, the film highlights America’s lasting legacy in the war zones we’ve left behind after declaring “mission accomplished.”Filmmakers Alice and Lincoln Day feature several expert talking-heads who guide the narrative matter-of-factly through our various assaults on the lands in which we wage war. It’s not an entertaining documentary, it doesn’t use animation or clever editing to engage. It has facts and visual evidence on its side. And if the melted faces of children affected by Agent Orange or the landmine-mangled foot of an elephant doesn’t viscerally affect you, then you have a harder heart than mine.

A statistic the film cites is that prior to the past hundred years 90 percent of war victims were combatants and 10 percent were civilians. Now it is the reverse, with 90 percent of victims being civilians to 10 percent actual combatants. The total body counts may be lower, but the documentary makes clear the human costs of spreading “freedom.” In addition there’s the toll on our coral reefs, water supply, soil, air and just about everything else we need to sustain life on Earth. There’s a cringe-worthy moment of footage of a U.S. armed forces official selling the natives around Bikini Atoll on their important contribution to humanity in allowing nuclear bomb tests near their homes.

It becomes clear that people in these conflict areas don’t hate us, as Bush said, because of our freedom, they hate us because we’re assholes. We seem to have a bad habit of bombing, consuming resources, salting the earth and moving on. The film doesn’t look to place blame on our men and women in the armed services, but does shine a light on economic policies that put them there. With documentaries like this, it’s getting harder and harder for our government to sell war as the humanitarian act of liberation.  If you have to see the proof for yourself, the images are here and they’re not easy to look at.

The film is being aired locally around the country, is available for screenings and on DVD. For more information visit www.scarredlandsfilm.org

COULD THE CLIMATE CRISIS CREATE THE GREATEST LOVE STORY ON EARTH?

“Evolve Love: Love in a Time of Climate Crisis” is a creative feature documentary (in progress) that will take us on a voyage to discover the ways in which planet wide climate catastrophe could propel us into a sustainable future founded on empathy for all life on earth.

Caudalie Spa

By Paige Donner

Paige Donner is a Luxury Writer

There is one spa that was voted The Best Spa In The World by Condé Nast readers in 2010. That spa is in France’s Bordeaux region and sits serenely in the middle of a vast and prestigious AOC Graves vineyard. The spa? It is Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa.

On her parents’ vineyard and just next to her sister’s Small Luxury Hotel, Les Sources de Caudalie, in Bordeaux, Mathilde Thomas discovered a naturally occurring hot springs 540 feet below ground. This is the site on which she and her husband, Bertrand, built the signature Caudalie Spa based on the anti-oxidant, ant-aging properties they have patented from the seeds and skins of grapes.

Caudalie Vinotherapie beauty products are used exclusively at this idyllic spa in the Bordeaux countryside, in a vast wooden structure planted next to a pond with swans and indoor-outdoor swimming pools. Treatment rooms are both upstairs and downstairs and it is possible to walk from your hotel room in your robe to your spa treatment in the Caudalie Vinotherapie Spa with only a few feet of exposure to the outside air.

Famous among their treatments are the Barrel Bath, the Honey and Wine Wrap, thePulp Friction Massage with fresh grapes and the Crushed Cabernet Scrub. At each of the relaxation stations are small dishes of fresh grapes alongside pitchers of fresh water. Portishead and other “lounge” music is piped in overhead from the sound system, unless you request classical or another genre.

You can also go for a simple Caudalie Grand Facial Treatment. This includes a full facial massage, gentle buffing cream made from a base of crushed grape seeds, a moisturizing (or purifying, as needed) mask and anti-ageing serum for eyes and lips. You also have the choice of a hand or foot massage. Afterwards you are welcome to linger downstairs in the lounge chairs that overlook the vineyards and dip into the pool that has strategic water jets fitted at just the perfect height to pulsate relaxing water onto your neck and shoulders.

There is also now a Caudalie Spa in NYC. Read More on Greening Beauty.

The hotel is involved, through its Leading Hotels of the Worldmembership in the “Make a carbon neutral booking” program, allowing their clients the opportunity to fully offset the carbon emissions generated by their travel.  It was just a year ago, in July 2010, that Hotel Fouquet’s Barrière was the first hotel in Europe to receive the distinguished Luxury Eco Certification Standard (L.E.C.S.) from Sustainable Travel International.

In 2010 approximately 4-6 tons of organic waste was recycled by Hotel Fouquet’s Barrière .

In 2009, 30 tons of waste was recycled by Hotel Fouquet’s Barrière.

The hotel works with Saria Industries which offers them the best by-products from their upstream and downstream Biomass recycling systems.  The company collects organic waste, primarily food waste, which is then sorted before being processed. Through a biomethane process, the waste generates gases used to produce heat and electrical power while the remaining solid waste is used as fertilizer.

Pop Earth is Pommery’s first “eco-citizen” champagne and it had its world debut at Hotel Fouquet’s Barrière. The champagne is made from Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay grapes harvested from sustainable vineyards. It is bottled in lighter bottles that use only half the glass and labelled with recycled paper and printed with solvent-free inks.

Tea Time

Tea served is all organic and the hotel prides itself on its relationship with Pascal Hamour who packages his teas in biodegradable bags. They serve these refined, subtly aromatic teas with Fair Trade sugar.

Vendange, Bordeaux

Every harvest season, the Hotel Fouquet’s Barrière team participates in the  Hotel Fouquet’s Barrière Grape Harvest on the Bordeaux Chateau of prestige winemaker Marie-Laure Lurton. The vintage is then auctioned off and proceeds are donated to the reforestation project of the Gabardon municipalities. Read the detailed article on Local Food And Wine.

Outstanding Service, Luxury Accommodations

Lucien Barriere Logo - Greening ParisIf outstanding service is truly what sets a Five-Star property apart, then Hotel Fouquet’s Barrière’s designated Butler service distinguishes it from all other Luxury Hotels. Mayor Villaraigosa Announces Electric Vehicle Pilot Program

(April 21, 2011) LOS ANGELES — Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, LADWP General Manager Ron Nichols, and environmental leaders announced today an LADWP pilot program that will provide rebates of up to $2,000 to the first 1,000 LADWP customers for home chargers and installation costs for their electric vehicles.

Electric-vehicle-charging-station-green_blog_network

“Los Angeles is leading the nation in cleaner, greener transportation solutions,” Mayor Villaraigosa said. “By offering significant rebates for home electric chargers, we hope to make electric cars more cost-effective than gasoline powered vehicles for Angelenos.”

READ ON GREENING PARIS ABOUT AUTOLIB’ EV PROGRAM:

Car Service On Demand Click Here

Yesterday, the Board of Water and Power Commissioners approved the Electric Vehicle Home Charger Rebate Program – Charge Up LA – to ease the financial burden for residents who want to install a rapid (Level 2) charger at their home for qualifying electric vehicles. Beginning May 1, 2011, the LADWP’s goal is to stprovide rebates for 3,000 to 5,000 EV home chargers.

The LADWP will track the EV charging patterns to ascertain where to allocate resources for potential energy growth. By monitoring charging patterns, the LADWP can guard against straining the grid.

As gas prices continue to rise, EVs could become a better economic value for LADWP customers. Compared to regular gas-powered vehicles, the “fuel” cost of an EV is about equal to $1 per gallon.

The range of the rebate will depend on the type of charger and the related equipment installed by the customer. To qualify for the rebate, customers must participate in LADWP’s Residential Time-of-Use Rate, which provides a significant discount for electrical use during “off-peak” hours—weeknights and anytime on weekends.

During these “off peak” hours, EV owners will not only save money – they will take advantage of renewable energy from wind power. By charging at night – the peak hours of wind power and production – owners will maximize renewable wind power and will also ease the strain on the electric grid.

“We expect most of our customers to charge their electric vehicles at night and the result is a double win for the environment,” General Manager Ron Nichols said. “We generate electricity with renewable wind power, and we store that renewable energy in car batteries that then powers Angeleno’s cars during the day.”

The rebate program is part of an overall strategy by the City to ensure that Los Angeles is EV ready. At the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, the Mayor announced a program to help residential customers within the City of Los Angeles go from permit to plug-in for home electric vehicle chargers under 7 days, provided the customer’s electrical system can support the charging requirements.

Components of LADWP’s EV strategy include:

EV Infrastructure: LADWP will upgrade the 86 existing City of Los Angeles owned public chargers. LADWP plans to invest in additional new public chargers after existing ones are upgraded. LADWP will also encourage private owners of older style chargers to upgrade to the new standards.

Data Sharing: LADWP is coordinating with major EV charger vendors to share data regarding EV purchases and driving patterns that will help determine locations for new chargers. LADWP is also developing a standard agreement with charger vendors to meet conditions of the U.S. Department of Energy’s “The EV Project,” aimed at bringing more federal grant funds to the city.

Public Information: LADWP has established a website, www.ladwp.com/EV, for comprehensive one-stop information on the rebate program, installation and permits, rate discount and meter options.

Regional Collaboration: LADWP is collaborating with regional agencies, industry, various jurisdictions and other electric utilities to foster a seamless driving experience throughout the region.

Power Grid Upgrades: EV driving patterns and charging data will be used to help forecast and prepare the electric grid for energy growth related to EVs. The information will also support LADWP’s Smart Grid Demonstration Project.

EV Discount: LADWP offers a 2.5 cent per kilowatt-hour (kWh) discount to residential customers who charge their EVs during off-peak hours when demand for energy is lowest (nights and weekends). The discount is available to customers on LADWP’s Residential Time-of-Use Rate, who already benefit from reduced rates during off-peak hours.

Customer Service: A team of LADWP Customer Service Representatives has been trained to answer questions and assist customers with the charger installation process. For direct assistance, customers may call 1-866-484-0433 or email PluginLA  at  ladwp dot com.

To download an application or for the EV Home Charger Rebate and other information, visitwww.ladwp.com/EV.

This is the Mayor’s latest initiative to transition Los Angeles away from relying on dirty diesel to be the cleanest, greenest City in the country. In March, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority voted to ratify a new pilot program to add 30 electric buses to the fleet. After a careful evaluation of whether electric buses do in fact save money and are more efficient, the city will implement the program on a larger scale – setting a national precedent.

Vinothérapie by Caudalie

By Paige Donner

Paige Donner is a Luxury Writer.

Caudalie is a wine term, in French, that refers to the length of time the taste of a wine lingers in the mouth. The longer the better. It is a measurement of a wine’s quality.

Caudalie_grapes

A spa and beauty care line based on patents derived from bio-research on the beauty benefits of the grape, Caudalie is a fitting name for this French line that originated in the heart of Bordeaux, in fact in the prestigious Graves appellation.

Mathilde Thomas is the Founder and Creator of Caudalie, a top-selling beauty line in French Pharmacies, where so many of the best beauty brands in France are sold. Since a year or two, Ms. Thomas, now NYC-based, has launched her brand in the U.S.

But though this young beauty visionary may spend her day-to-day in NYC, it is in Bordeaux where her heart, and the base of Caudalie Vinothérapie products, remain firmly rooted.

Caudalie_banner

Working with Dr. Vercauteren of Bordeaux’s University of Pharmaceuticals, Ms. Thomas was intrigued by a claim he made to her during the 1993 grape harvest on her parents esteemed Bordeaux vineyard, “Do you know that you are throwing away treasures?” he asked her when he saw the grape skins and grape seeds being discarded.

She quickly learned, by listening to Dr. Vercauteren’s explanations, that grapeseeds and grape skins hold extraordinary deposits of anti-oxidants, in the form of polyphenols. And this is where Ms. Thomas showed true entrepreneurial genius, because from that bio-detritus, she created the luxury “Cosm-ethics” beauty care line and brand, Caudalie.

Caudalie owns three patents that help slow the signs of skin-aging:

1) Polyphenols from Grape-Seeds

“The most powerful anti-oxidants occurring in the vegetable world. They stop free radicals, which are the main cause of cutaneous ageing. They are the best anti-ageing shield for the skin.

2) Resveratrol from Grapevine Stalks

It gives the skin back its youthfulness and firmness. Harvard’s Department of Medicine identified Resveratrol as the most effective active ingredient for prolonging cellular life.

3) Viniferine from Grapevine Sap

The sap from grapevine stalks was used in the past to diminish dark spots and clarify the complexion of young women. Viniferine protects against dark spots and leaves your complexion incredibly radiant.

The Caudalie researchers have come up with a few more grape treasures which are formulated into the beauty line such as “organic grape water,” grape-seed oil, and Vinolevure®.

“There’s no miracle cure for skin ageing, there is a patent!” – Mathilde Thomas, Founder-Creator, Caudalie, Skincare Line

You can rest assured you are making an ethically beautiful choice with these products, too. None of the formulas are tested on animals and they ask that their suppliers do the same. They use the maximum amount of natural ingredients, that are both biodegradable and respect the environment, in their product lines. Her coined term of “Cosm-ethics,” refers to the fact that no animal ingredients, parabens, phenoxyethanol, phthalates, mineral oil, synthetic colorings or sodium laureth sulfate are used in any of the formulations or products.

There are also Caudalie Spas: In Bordeaux, France; NYC, New York; Versailles, France; and in Spain. Read the related article on Spa Caudalie in Greening Beauty.

Cotillard-woody-allen-par

The film is a “love letter to Paris” and will screen opening night, May 11th, on the Croisette the same night that it opens on screens across France.  Robert De Niro is presiding as judge over the Film Festival this year, its 64th, as part of a Franco-American celebration and the celebrating of De Niro’s  Tribeca Film Festival’s 10th year.

Greening Hollywood was recently privileged to a conversation with co-producer of Midnight in Paris, Raphael Benoliel, who, theoretically, supports the notion of green film sets and eco-friendly film production. France is ramping up in a big way towards Eco Productions and green seems to be the talk of the town. Let’s see if we can add some green to the Cote d’Azur!

Mad Men Take Paris

Mad Men Take Paris

Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner was in Paris recently to accept the Vermeil Medal of Honor from Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe’s cultural deputy.

Christina Hendricks and John Slattery, co-stars of the hit U.S. TV show, accompanied Weiner to celebrate the recently launched (in France) Sundance Channel.

The small Hotel de Ville gathering was followed by an exclusive cocktail for Rainbow Media Execs in Paris’s 17th Arrondissement’s newest Hotel Royal Parc Monceau.

During France’s Cesar Award Month (the French equivalent to the Oscars) there is ample opportunity to discuss Eco Productions and Green Sets of which Mad Men has been an exemplary model. But MadMen in Paris? They rolled out the Red Carpet…Not the Green Carpet this time. Tant Pis!!
