Academy Awards Red Carpet Inspires Eco-Fashion For Designers And Movie Stars

[This guest post is by Jemima Lopez. You can read more about her on the website: Zen College Life]

The carpet may have been red at the 84th Academy Awards, but if fashion designers have anything to do with it, future star-stilted award ceremonies will soon be filled with a lot more green in the coming mo
nths—Giorgio Armani, Chanel, Tom Ford, Karl Lagerfeld, Gucci, and Yves Saint Laurent are just some of the few designers who are rumored to have been inspired by the stunning eco-friendly dresses seen at last Sunday’s award ceremony.

Hundreds of professional and aspiring fashion designers submitted gowns made of sustainable products earlier this year to compete in the third annual Red Carpet Green Dress Contest. This contest, which was initiated in 2009 by environmental advocate and wife of Director James Cameron, Suzy Amis Cameron, was created in the hopes of significantly reducing the environmental footprint fashion can have on the planet. Contest winners had the opportunity of seeing their gowns worn by some of the hottest Hollywood stars at the Oscars, including Best Actress winner Meryl Steep, on Feb 26. That said, below are some of the winners as well as the Hollywood stars who rocked the dresses.

Italian movie producer and environmental advocate Livia Firth wore this lavish, bright red custom-made couture Valentino gown, which according to the “fashion police” was beautiful enough to dub her as one of the best dressed. What many didn’t know however was that the fabric was a hybrid of polyester derived from recycled plastic bottles and Valentino’s house silk. She also wore diamond earrings from Celleija, a sustainable jeweler. Hubby Colin Firth did his part to sustain the planet too—he recycled the Tom Ford suit he wore to the Academy Awards the year before.

Caudalie Spa

By Paige Donner

Paige Donner is a Luxury Writer

There is one spa that was voted The Best Spa In The World by Condé Nast readers in 2010. That spa is in France’s Bordeaux region and sits serenely in the middle of a vast and prestigious AOC Graves vineyard. The spa? It is Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa.

On her parents’ vineyard and just next to her sister’s Small Luxury Hotel, Les Sources de Caudalie, in Bordeaux, Mathilde Thomas discovered a naturally occurring hot springs 540 feet below ground. This is the site on which she and her husband, Bertrand, built the signature Caudalie Spa based on the anti-oxidant, ant-aging properties they have patented from the seeds and skins of grapes.

Caudalie Vinotherapie beauty products are used exclusively at this idyllic spa in the Bordeaux countryside, in a vast wooden structure planted next to a pond with swans and indoor-outdoor swimming pools. Treatment rooms are both upstairs and downstairs and it is possible to walk from your hotel room in your robe to your spa treatment in the Caudalie Vinotherapie Spa with only a few feet of exposure to the outside air.

Famous among their treatments are the Barrel Bath, the Honey and Wine Wrap, thePulp Friction Massage with fresh grapes and the Crushed Cabernet Scrub. At each of the relaxation stations are small dishes of fresh grapes alongside pitchers of fresh water. Portishead and other “lounge” music is piped in overhead from the sound system, unless you request classical or another genre.

You can also go for a simple Caudalie Grand Facial Treatment. This includes a full facial massage, gentle buffing cream made from a base of crushed grape seeds, a moisturizing (or purifying, as needed) mask and anti-ageing serum for eyes and lips. You also have the choice of a hand or foot massage. Afterwards you are welcome to linger downstairs in the lounge chairs that overlook the vineyards and dip into the pool that has strategic water jets fitted at just the perfect height to pulsate relaxing water onto your neck and shoulders.

There is also now a Caudalie Spa in NYC. Read More on Greening Beauty.

Vinothérapie by Caudalie

By Paige Donner

Paige Donner is a Luxury Writer.

Caudalie is a wine term, in French, that refers to the length of time the taste of a wine lingers in the mouth. The longer the better. It is a measurement of a wine’s quality.

Caudalie_grapes

A spa and beauty care line based on patents derived from bio-research on the beauty benefits of the grape, Caudalie is a fitting name for this French line that originated in the heart of Bordeaux, in fact in the prestigious Graves appellation.

Mathilde Thomas is the Founder and Creator of Caudalie, a top-selling beauty line in French Pharmacies, where so many of the best beauty brands in France are sold. Since a year or two, Ms. Thomas, now NYC-based, has launched her brand in the U.S.

But though this young beauty visionary may spend her day-to-day in NYC, it is in Bordeaux where her heart, and the base of Caudalie Vinothérapie products, remain firmly rooted.

Caudalie_banner

Working with Dr. Vercauteren of Bordeaux’s University of Pharmaceuticals, Ms. Thomas was intrigued by a claim he made to her during the 1993 grape harvest on her parents esteemed Bordeaux vineyard, “Do you know that you are throwing away treasures?” he asked her when he saw the grape skins and grape seeds being discarded.

She quickly learned, by listening to Dr. Vercauteren’s explanations, that grapeseeds and grape skins hold extraordinary deposits of anti-oxidants, in the form of polyphenols. And this is where Ms. Thomas showed true entrepreneurial genius, because from that bio-detritus, she created the luxury “Cosm-ethics” beauty care line and brand, Caudalie.

Caudalie owns three patents that help slow the signs of skin-aging:

1) Polyphenols from Grape-Seeds

“The most powerful anti-oxidants occurring in the vegetable world. They stop free radicals, which are the main cause of cutaneous ageing. They are the best anti-ageing shield for the skin.

2) Resveratrol from Grapevine Stalks

It gives the skin back its youthfulness and firmness. Harvard’s Department of Medicine identified Resveratrol as the most effective active ingredient for prolonging cellular life.

3) Viniferine from Grapevine Sap

The sap from grapevine stalks was used in the past to diminish dark spots and clarify the complexion of young women. Viniferine protects against dark spots and leaves your complexion incredibly radiant.

The Caudalie researchers have come up with a few more grape treasures which are formulated into the beauty line such as “organic grape water,” grape-seed oil, and Vinolevure®.

“There’s no miracle cure for skin ageing, there is a patent!” – Mathilde Thomas, Founder-Creator, Caudalie, Skincare Line

You can rest assured you are making an ethically beautiful choice with these products, too. None of the formulas are tested on animals and they ask that their suppliers do the same. They use the maximum amount of natural ingredients, that are both biodegradable and respect the environment, in their product lines. Her coined term of “Cosm-ethics,” refers to the fact that no animal ingredients, parabens, phenoxyethanol, phthalates, mineral oil, synthetic colorings or sodium laureth sulfate are used in any of the formulations or products.

There are also Caudalie Spas: In Bordeaux, France; NYC, New York; Versailles, France; and in Spain. Read the related article on Spa Caudalie in Greening Beauty.

Eco-Friendly Paris, Even the NY Times Is (Finally!) Taking Notice

If you pick up a Weekend Edition of the NY Times Travel section today, you will find inside a wonderful article highlighting some of Paris’s green-friendly programs. Of special interest is the fact that Paris ranks number 10 as a Green City according to a report referenced at the 2009 UN Conference.

Most of the Green Points highlighted in the article have been written about already here on Greening Paris and also on our affiliate blog, Local Food And Wine. Both are published by Paige Donner c. Paige Donner, Ed-in-Chief.

It’s wonderful to see, this Earth Month 2011, that the NY Times, of which the International Herald Tribune is its global edition, sat up and took notice of what Paris is doing in a green-friendly way!

>Stevia is A Super-Beauty Food

>

30 times sweeter than sugar, Stevia, the herb-derived non-caloric sweetener that has replaced those others recently, is actually a beauty remedy as well!

It comes from a small green plant (stevia rebaudiana) found in Paraguay, the native Guarani Indians have apparently always used it to sweeten their drinks.

It’s also good for fruit salads and to sweeten whipped cream!

For your beauty regimen, its ultra-sweet power gives it its super hydrating properties, particularly for your entire body. Its “steviosides” not only moisturize but also soften the skin. Melvita makes an exquisite blend of thym infused honey and stevia called Apicosma that reveals ultra-soft, creamy rich and touchable arms, legs and all-over. You can also try blending some of your own beauty Super Potions using packets of Stevia that you find at your health food store.

>Interview With Honoré des Prés Founder Christian David

>

Interview with Christian David, founder of Honoré des Prés natural perfumes from France and Greening Beauty Editor, Paige Donner.

GB: 1. What was your background before launching your natural perfume line?

I worked 9 years ago for DIOR in the cosmetics creation department.  At that time I worked with Hedi Slimane to launch Dior Homme Dermo System. Just before launching Honoré des Prés, I worked with Mr. and Mme. d’ Ornano for Sisley and while there discovered their natural and luxury beauty.

GB: 2. Please describe the tradition – metier – of perfume making in France. Is it something you are born into?

Yes, I remember all the launches 25 years ago … like Angel,  J’adore Dior … at this time we had to wait many years for a real novelty from the most beautiful houses of perfumes and it was always an event … We have had a lot of opportunity to preserve all the tradition and the metier of Perfume in France especially in Grasse. I work with Robertet , one of the most beautiful Perfume House in Grasse with such exceptional and natural ingredients … the transformation of all these beautiful and exquisite flowers is a real dream and secret ..

GB: 3. What inspired you to launch a natural perfume line?
To put this secret in the bottle, to explain to the whole world that it’s at this time possible to smell a real flower in your perfume and not just a compilation of chemicals ….
And of course, more than an inspiration but the unique possibility to launch such a special line of perfumes was the day when I met Olivia Giacobetti … one of the world’s top Noses.  For me definitely the best and the first, … without her, this magical story would never begin…

GB: 4. Describe the moment when you conceived of packaging your perfumes in a coffee cup?

You know, sometimes the story is written … this day, in New York after a Coffee  & Cupcake at Magnolia bakery in the West Village, the artistic Director of Honoré des Prés, Ms. Dominique,  looked over at me …. and showed me my Coffee Cup in my hand and, like a song in the street, smiled and said, “It will be the packaging for the NY Collection.”

I promise you that this night, when I took my flight from JFK to paris with this Paper Cup in my hand, I was so happy and excited because I knew now that this paper cup would be a part of the future. Six months later, we launched the collection at colette paris with a big Carrots Party !!!!

GB: 5. how do you see the state of the natural beauty market in France? the U.S.?
Definitely the Future, the Trend …. and the only solution to have new perfumes that don’t look to the others …. We know that so many houses are working on it ….

GB: 6. What does perfume represent to a woman, in your view?
For me , there are two possibilities …. the sensuality  or the intimacy ….the perfume has to be very feminine and sensual to increase the personality of women but it can be very light and intimate to propose a new way of pureness and philosophy …. these 2 opposites are for Honoré des Prés House the sensual Vamp à NY and the purity of Nu Green from the first collection. That is one of my favorites!

GB: 7. It’s courageous to launch a company – of any kind – in this economy. What gave you the motivation?

It’s like a dream. I absolutely don’t have the feeling  like I launched a company. I just know that we write the story of Honoré des Prés and everything that happens is like a new page of the book.  The perfume world is so magical !!! and the natural one will be emotional !

>Elie Saab’s Delight In The 70’s

>

"I wanted to work with a different style of woman for this collection; A woman who works at home, a woman who vacations on a yacht, a woman who attends evening soirees. I didn't want to use too many muses this time," confided Saab after the show.

Accessories made a big debut on the Elie Saab Paris fashion runway today. Navel-reaching gold chains dangling heavy pendants decorated the occasional plunging neckline. Gold cuffs worn on both wrists provided just the accent for the sable, salmon and smoky white one-piece jumpsuits, shorts suits and floor-length gowns.

"Accessories are a big development for the house," commented Saab. "We emphasized our accessories this year in the line for that reason." Salmon-suede clutch trimmed with metal and a jewel of a bag covered in crystals, also textured with tone-on-tone stone gray leather interlacing could be seen being coveted by the catwalking and stunning models with free-flowing coiffed hair.

When asked which celebrities would wear his creations best this year, he responded, "Any who like the line." Dita Von Teese, a self-described "closet environmentalist" sat in the front row. The line for this season is ultra-feminine and looks like it would feel delightful to wear and to walk in. The ultra-petite and feminine Von Teese could easily strap on a pair of the chunky-heeled suede matching sandals and sway down the length of a yacht and into an all-night soiree.

The collection's colors evoke the exuberance of Bahia. The designs evoke the Rockstar era of 70s St. Tropez Jagger excess.  Music for the show was by Michel Gaubert who played Rolling Stone's "Emotional Rescue" and such 70s era classics. Hair by Orlando Pita and team; Makeup by Tom Pecheux and team using MAC Pro.

>Fashion Forward – Mode A Paris

>

The designers this season are taking their lines forward. Fashion Forward is what we’re seeing on the runways, backstage, on the streets and in the showrooms.

Fashion Forward – Paris Fashion Week 2010 for Spring Summer ’11

From Galliano’s Polynesian Sailor-on-shore-leave motif for Dior to John Paul Gaultier’s flagrant use of 3-D glasses – for his runway show! – which consisted of every inch the three-dimensional plus-sized models in Joan Jett wigs. Beth Ditto, pouring out of her rosette-trimmed teddy for his finale stole the show.

Givenchy Goes Animal. Photo by Monica Feudi/ GoRunway.com

Givenchy went animal on us.  Raw and untamed, Riccardo Tisci delivered his models to pulsing Techno at the Lyceé Carnot.  Zippers snaked up side seams and flashes of metal punctuated the models’ catwalk.

Eco-Alert: One lone Eco Taxi was spotted outside the Givenchy venue dropping off guests. Guests were holding letter-sized animal-print invitations printed on colored paper.

Change channels to Stella’s show where only Vegans need apply. Lemons and grapefruit  spilled out everywhere. Glee actress 24-year-old Lea Michele, this month’s Glamour Cover Girl, said it was the only show this fur-free animal lover was taking in on her first Paris Fashion season.

MORE CHLOÉ PHOTOS ON WWD.com

Chloé was all grown up and elegant…as usual. There’s a reason why Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly and Brigitte Bardot have all worn Chloé. In a word, elegant.

Chloé delivered again today. The runway show was held at the Espace Ephémère in the Jardin des Tuileries, and though it started 45 minutes late, designer Hannah MacGibbon delivered to reggae-rasta-rap beats with Anna Wintour in her front row.  In a show of bright whites and nude beiges, the model wearing only a silk sheer blouse raised nary an eyebrow, though Grace Coddington, seated next to Wintour, seemed to take notice.

Somehow it doesn’t surprise that Stella McCartney was at Chloé before she launched her own house.  On my way out, coming face to face with Anna Wintour gave me a jolt of thrills I hadn’t expected. Is it from knowing that the woman commands a part of the billion dollar fashion industry?  Of course, only afterwards I realized I should have asked her what she thought of Eco Fashion. It’s not very often this reporter is caught up in the excitement of a passing moment. Chloé had a packed house and a front row of editors, in addition to Wintour. Though it seemed that the focus of the show was also a bit of a perfume launch.

New Perfume. Commercial directed by Roman Coppola.

And to round this up for October 4th with only two more days of Fashion Week left, Mary-Kate and Ashley showed their new line The Row, by appointment in a lovely salon boasting a boiserie and soaring white ceilings. Elegant suits, freely-flowing bias-cut dresses all in silk satin back crepe. They kept their 15 outfits tight and to a palette of black, pale pink and ivory. That they weren’t quite ready for N.Y. served them well. Where better than Paris to show your Spring Summer ’11 line the first time?! Photos are now up on Bing.com.
